Precautions for welding of S45C steel

1. Warm up
Preheating is conducive to reducing the maximum hardness of the heat-affected zone of S45C steel and preventing cold cracks. This is the main process measure for welding S45C steel. Preheating can also improve the joint plasticity and reduce post-weld residual stress.

2.Bevel form
Make the weldment into a U-shaped groove as much as possible for welding. If it is a casting defect, the shape of the groove dug by the shovel should be rounded. The purpose is to reduce the proportion of the base metal melted into the weld metal, so as to reduce the carbon content in the weld of S45C steel and prevent the occurrence of cracks.

3.Welding process parameters
Since the proportion of the base metal melted into the first layer of weld metal is up to about 30%, when welding the first layer of weld, small current and slow welding speed should be used as much as possible to reduce the penetration depth of the base metal.

4. Post-weld heat treatment
It is best to perform stress-relieving heat treatment on the welded parts immediately after welding, especially for highly rigid structural parts and welded parts working under severe conditions (dynamic load or impact load).

5. Applicable welding rods
When welding S45C steel, welding rods that meet the material properties and welding process requirements should be selected. The following types of welding rods are suitable for welding S45C steel:
E6010 brazing rod: suitable for welding on thin materials such as steel sheets.
E7018 carbon steel electrode: has good welding performance and is suitable for a variety of welding conditions.
