SS400 belongs to JIS G3101 specifications of rolled steels for general structure.A36 come from specification ASTM A36/A36M for carbon structural steels. This meas these SS400 and A36 steels both used in mild structural industry, have the same applications.
The ASTM standard A36 steel and the JIS standard SS400 steel chemical composition are also much the same.
ASTM A36 SS400 steel Chemical composition %:
Grade | C (t≤16mm) | Si | Mn | P | S | Cu |
ASTM A36 | 0.26 max | 0.40 max | - | 0.040 max | 0.050 max | 0.20 min |
SS400 | - | - | - | 0.050 max | 0.050 max | - |
ASTM A36 SS400 steel properties:
Grade | Yield strength ReH/(N/mm2) (t≤16mm) min | Tensile strength Rm/(N/mm2) (3mm≤t≤16mm) | Elongation A/%(3mm≤t≤40mm) min |
ASTM A36 | 250 | 400-550 | 23 |
SS400 | 245 | 400-500 | 21 |
Both ASTM A36 SS400 steel are designed for structural purposes. In common application cases, ASTM A36 SS400 mechanical property can achieve the same purpose. If you have special steel requirements, you need to look up at the chemical composition and mechanical property table to make sure whether ASTM A36 steel or JIS SS400 steel more suitable.
