SS400-Japanese Industrial Standard JIS G 3101 - Rolled steel for general structure
American ASTM A36-Carbon Structural Steel
Steel grades ASTM A36 and SS400 under JIS G3101 both are common used carbon structure steels,mild steels.When rolling steel plates ASTM Grade A36,As rolled or Controlled rolled is ok for thickness belows 40mm (1.5inch) normally.If above 40mm (1.5inch),customers can choose Normalized for improve steel property.Stee plates SS400 is also the same.
Mechnical property charts for SS400 and A36 as belows,so these two mild steel grades are very similar,can replacement when urgent demands for end users.
Mechnical property for SS400 steel plate:
Thickness (mm) | ||||
SS400 | ≤16 | > 16 ≤40 | > 40 ≤100 | > 100 |
Yield strength (≥Mpa) | 245 | 235 | 215 | 205 |
Tensile strength (Mpa) | 400-510 |
Mechnical property for A36 steel plate:
Thickness (mm) | Yield strength (≥Mpa) | Tensile strength (Mpa) | Elongation in ≥,% | |
T≤200 | 250 | 400-550 | 200mm | 50mm |
200<T | 220 | 400-550 | 20 | 23 |
Difference is that Ss 400 has no chemical composition assigned, while A36 is allowed for max. 0.25% C and 0.40% Si.
In case when thickness is over 3/4'' to 1 1/2'' [20 to 40], incl., max. 0.80-1.20% Mn is also assigned for A36.
