42CrMo4 steel has high strength, high hardenability, good toughness, small deformation during quenching, high creep strength and durable strength at high temperature. 42CrMo4 steel is an improved variety of American AISI standard 4140 steel. This steel has good machinability, easy polishing, easy to bite, and can be electroplated.
42CrMo4 steel is generally supplied in the hot rolled or annealed state, and its hardness is usually lower than 241HB. Such hardness is difficult to have a good performance in the application of the product. If you want to take advantage of the characteristics of 42CrMo4 steel, it needs to be quenched and tempered to obtain satisfactory comprehensive performance. The hardness of 42CrMo4 steel is optional within the range of 28-58HRC, but it is usually used between 28-34HRC. The higher hardness application of 42CrMo4 steel can be realized by nitriding, the surface hardness can reach 550-700HV3, and the nitriding depth is 0.1-0.6mm.
42CrMo4 steel can be carburized, but not required. The average carbon content of 42CrMo4 steel is 0.42%. As an alloy structural steel, it is suitable for quenching and tempering treatment to obtain good comprehensive mechanical properties.
