SS400 and Q235 are almost the same. But there are some differences in the exact performance, Q235 makes rules upon element content of C, Si, Mn, S, P and so on. But SS400 is only required the content of S, P element is under 0.05%. The yield point of Q235 is greater than 235 Mpa, while SS400's yield point is 245 Mpa. The meaning of SS400 has two parts, "SS" means SS400 is a kind of steel for general structure, and the "400" means its tensile strength is more than 400 Mpa. Q235 means its yield point is more than 235 Mpa, Q235 belongs to carbon structural steel SS400 is under standard JIS G3101, and Q235 is under standard GB/T 700.
SS400 is a steel grade symbol in Japan, in fact, it is equal to Q235. Q235 is a kind of steel material, Q represent the yield point of this material, and 235 is the numerical value of yield point, it is about 235 Mpa, and it will get smaller as the material thickness is increased.
