What is SAE 1006 steel material?

SAE 1006 contains mainly carbon as the alloying element. The alloy contains silicon and manganese. Nickel, Chromium, aluminium, copper and molybdenum are also present in small quantities to offer some excellent features. Chromium provides corrosion resistance in neutral or oxidizing environments. Apart from that, Nickel, copper and molybdenum give improved resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking in reducing environments. The main features of the SAE 1006 Plates are softness and ductility.

SAE 1006 (according to ASTM A510M) steel is commonly used in manufacturing rolled wire with subsequent drawing and no prior or subsequent heat-treatment. Its chemical composition allows for a high level of zinc adhesion to the steel base and provides ideal conditions for the production of galvanized and rolled wire. The steel’s optimal mechanical parameters allow for high-quality thermomechanical processing by a wire mill, which results in high-quality rolled wire that is exceptionally ductile for drawing.
